Food art can be inspired by anywhere. Like this Halloween inspired dessert by the famous painting The Scream by Edvard Munch!
I'm sure you've seen his painting somewhere in your life, and this is edible version of the cute Halloween version of The Scream.
Not only is this dessert adorable, but it's also incredibly delicious! The vibrant purple color comes from purple yam, beautifully swirled with coconut cream. Inside, you'll find sweet black rice and tapioca pearls, adding a delightful chew and texture. The combination of colors and textures is a feast for the eyes, and the sweet, comforting flavor is simply irresistible. This creative dessert isn't just a treat for the eyes—it's bursting with flavor and texture! It’s sure to be a hit at your Halloween party!
The Screaming Flavour
Coconut cream adds a tropical flavour and enhances the creamy texture of the purple yam. We love pairing coconut cream with purple yam because the combination is perfect!
If you've tried purple yam before, you'll know how well it complements coconut. If not, you’re in for a treat. Purple yam has a naturally sweet, floral taste, with a texture similar to sweet potato.
Do you enjoy horchata? If you like the flavour of rice-based dishes, you'll definitely love this dessert! It features a hint of sweet rice and the delightful chewiness of wild rice, making it a unique and delicious treat.
The Screamers Halloween Dessert Recipe
You can find the Purple Yam and Sweet Black Rice recipe in another blog post. It’s an easy recipe that uses just a few key ingredients. First, you’ll need to steam the purple yam, and separately prepare the sweet black rice and tapioca. Once everything is ready, combine them to create a delicious, sweet, and healthy dessert!
If you’re following the recipe, remember not to add the coconut cream during the cooking process. Instead, we’ll add the coconut cream when the purple yam purée is placed in the mini glass cups for serving.
Decorating the Screamer Halloween Cups
Once your dessert is ready, it's time for the fun part—decorating the cups!
1. I’m using clear 10oz glass cups, which are perfect for desserts. Fill each cup with the dessert mixture, leaving about half an inch of space at the top.
2. Next, we'll add the coconut cream to the purple yam purée. The key is to pour the cream slowly and close to the surface. Pouring it gently and close to the cup will help you create beautiful swirls in the dessert.
3. Gently wash the outside of the banana with mild soap and rinse thoroughly. Slice the banana at an angle into half-inch pieces. For the eyes, use chocolate chips, and for the mouth, you can get creative with various options—I chose sunflower seeds.
And there you have it, your creation is complete! If you don’t have sunflower seeds, you can also use a chocolate chip for the mouth. The banana will float for a while, but don’t leave it in too long, as it will start to turn brown over time.
